Fleur-De-Lis Motorsports Welcomes Millennium Fuel Energy Drink to Nationwide Series
Richmond, VA (September 10, 2010)
Carl Long and the Fleur-De-Liss Motorsports Team traveled to the
Richmond International Raceway for the third of four NASCAR Nationwide
Series new car races for 2010 on Friday night, September 10th. This race
was a special event for Long and the team because it was the first
short track race for the new Nationwide Series car plus Millennium Fuel
Energy Drink debuted as the sponsor of his #68 Chevrolet Impala.
NASCAR gave the Nationwide Series teams an open test day on Thursday to
work with their new car and made adjustments prior to final practice and
qualifying on Friday. After two sessions and six hours of testing, Carl
Long and the Millennium Fuel Energy Drink team were confident going
into qualifying. Long was the 41st of 44 competitors to make his race
against the clock. On his second qualifying lap, Long toured the .75
mile track in 22.508 seconds / 119.957 mph to earn the 41st starting
position.
At the start of the Virginia 529 College Savings 250, Long settled into a
competitive race pace and gained several positions in the first ten
laps. When the first caution of the 250-lap race waved on lap 12, Long
was running in the 39th position. Several laps after the restart on lap
17, Long reported to Crew Chief Morris Van Vleet that both the oil and
water temperature started to rise. When the second caution of the race
waved on lap 36, Long made a pit stop so that the crew could remove some
tape from the grille, refuel, and make a track bar adjustment. Long
would restart in 32nd position on lap 41.
Long got trapped in the outside lane after the restart and lost back to
37th by lap 45. Then, on lap 52, Long radioed the crew that his brakes
were starting to be an issue. However, Long was able to gain several
positions and at the 100-lap mark was running 34th.
With most of the leaders pitting on lap 110, Long stayed on the track
and moved up to 21st on lap 115. Unfortunately, his moving forward was
short-lived as his brakes were getting really bad plus the car was
bouncing on the left front. Long came to pit road on lap 117 for the
crew to examine the problem.
After a thorough examination, Long pulled the #68 Millennium Fuel Energy
Drink Chevrolet behind pit wall to the garage for repairs on lap 136.
The crew worked on the car and Long returned to the race on lap 159.
Even though Long lost forty laps in the garage, he was able to run very
competitive laps once he returned to the race. The Millennium Fuel
Energy Drink Chevrolet managed to take the checkered flag on the track
in the 39th position completing 207 laps.
"I'd like to thank Millennium Fuel Energy Drink for their support this
weekend", Long stated after the race. "My crew worked very hard to give
me a car that would get in this race and be competitive. I had a good
car until the issues with the brakes started. One thing for sure, brakes
are very, very important on any short track. I had to adjust my driving
style and use as little brakes as possible. Finally, I had to pit and
let the crew do their thing. I was able to return to the race and take
the checkered flag on the track."
"I'd also like to thank Fleur-De-Lis Farms, Fleur-De-Lis Construction,
and all of our supporters", Long added. "Plus, thanks to Chuck and Joan
Fridell for their support as well. I know we didn't get the results that
we wanted, but we learned more about this new Nationwide car which
will help us at Charlotte."
The next race for the #68 Millennium Fuel Energy Drink Chevrolet will be
at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on Friday, October 15th, for the fourth
and final Nationwide Series new car event for 2010.
